Grading the recent hires and fires of NFL Coaches

Oh, how I picked the wrong career path! Today’s coaches completely bomb with one organization, sit out a year or two, and then are brought in to coach once again. And it continues and continues and continues. Here are the grades for the most recent hires and fires in the NFL. More grades to come shortly. Stay tuned.

DALLAS COWBOYS HIRE MIKE McCARTHY: D –

This hire is just awful. The only reason I didn’t grade it an “F” is because the Cowboys chose McCarthy over Marvin Lewis and Jeff Fisher. Are you serious? Those were the candidates being considered for the top coaching job in the most popular sport in America? Jerry. I know you want a “yes, man” but have a little creativity.

Does Dallas seem like more of a contender today than they did two weeks ago? I think they are about the same. And that’s not what you want in a hire. They had a real chance to hire a coach that would have lit a fire under the team boosting them to the top of the NFC East. And yet, the Redskins improved, the Eagles stayed competitive and we’ll wait to see what the New York Football Giants end up doing. Who knows, maybe they’ll bring in Jason Garrett.

Speaking of Garrett, I bet we will someday learn that Jerry was real close to bringing him back for another year.

I guess we will soon find out if Mike McCarthy benefited all those years from having Aaron Rodgers or if McCarthy deserved some of the credit for Green Bay’s stability over the past decade.
